California Governor Gavin Newsom told CNN he would not challenge Kamala Harris for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination if she runs, calling a race between the two a 'gift from God' to their opponents and saying he would not waste voters' time. Newsom, term-limited out of the governorship this year, has been widely viewed as positioning for a 2028 bid and has repeatedly cast himself as a foil to Trump.
Harris said in October 2025 she might run again in 2028. Newsom said he considered running in 2024 but wasn't ready, and is still assessing his readiness for the next cycle. He separately renewed criticism of Trump's handling of Russia, saying Trump 'bent his knee' to Putin ahead of their August 2025 Alaska summit.

Promising not to run against a woman who hasn't said she's running is a low-cost way to look gracious while keeping every option open. It costs nothing today and can be quietly revised the day she actually announces, one way or the other. Politicians clearing their throats about 2028 this far out are just warming up the truck before anyone's agreed on where it's going.
