Republican Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar of Florida is airing a campaign ad declaring that President Trump's immigration enforcement has gone “too far,” a notable break for a member of his own party. Salazar, who won her Miami-Dade district by 20 points last cycle, now faces a serious challenge from Democrat Eliot Rodriguez, a former local news anchor, in a district that is 74% Hispanic.

In the ad, Salazar cites a claim that half of the 50,000 people detained in July had no criminal record and warns that “the same Hispanics” who backed Trump in 2024 now feel betrayed. She frames her position around the bipartisan Dignity Act, which she co-sponsors, that would let long-term undocumented immigrants earn legal status without access to federal benefits.

The bill has drawn conservative criticism as amnesty despite its 40 co-sponsors split evenly between parties. Salazar's message to the White House was blunt: be careful who's advising you.

An election has a way of clarifying a politician's principles right around the time the polling gets uncomfortable. Salazar spent years standing next to this administration's immigration push, and now that her own district is watching closely, she's found the caveats. Whether that's conviction or just good arithmetic is the kind of thing voters in her district will have plenty of time to decide before November.
