German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Ukrainian men of military age living in Germany should return home, and suggested Berlin could help Kyiv find them using welfare, residency, and registration data it already holds. He called this a matter worth discussing rather than a settled plan.

In the same interview Wadephul said Germany, as Ukraine's largest financial and military backer, expects more defense contracts to go to German companies, and that Berlin has asked Kyiv to fix what it called an unsatisfying order volume. Separately, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced Germany will send part of its own Patriot interceptor stockpile to Ukraine, saying that when in doubt, the choice should favor Ukraine.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A government offering to hand over its own residents' welfare and address data so another country can draft them is the kind of thing that would get a smaller official fired for a data breach. Pair that with a polite nudge to buy more German missiles and you have to wonder which errand came first. A neighbor helping you find your runaway nephew usually doesn't also ask him to buy a truck from his lot on the way out the door.
