Attorneys for Luigi Mangione, accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, met federal prosecutors Friday amid reports of a possible plea deal. Mangione faces two federal stalking charges each carrying up to life in prison, after a judge tossed the death-penalty-eligible murder charge in January.

He also faces a separate state trial set for September 8, having pleaded not guilty everywhere. A federal plea could let his lawyers argue the state case violates double jeopardy protections, though legal experts say it's genuinely unclear how a judge would rule.

Nobody involved — not Mangione's attorneys, not the U.S. Attorney's office, not the Manhattan DA — is saying anything beyond confirming a meeting happened.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Two governments racing to prosecute the same man for the same death raises the obvious question of what justice is actually being served here versus who gets to claim the conviction. The double jeopardy math might sort itself out in court, but the appearance of competing prosecutors haggling over jurisdiction like it's a trophy is its own indictment.
