Sen. Bernie Sanders told the California Nurses Association that if Democrats retake the Senate and he chairs the HELP Committee, he intends to seat Michigan candidate Abdul El-Sayed on it, whether El-Sayed wants that or not.

El-Sayed, who is not a practicing physician despite his medical degree, spoke to the same group about hospital corporations, AI-driven prior authorization, and his long-standing support for Medicare for All.

Both men framed single-payer healthcare as mainstream rather than fringe, citing polling, while El-Sayed faces Republican Mike Rogers in a race seen as pivotal to any Senate majority at all.

Handing out committee assignments before the votes are counted is a bit like promising your nephew the good truck before you've sold your own. It costs nothing to say and commits nobody to anything. Sanders has been fighting this fight since disco was popular, and the fight is still mostly speeches to friendly rooms.
