Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, speaking at the Supreme Court Bar Association's Independence Day flag hoisting, told young law graduates and lawyers that the responsibilities carried by the Bar since the freedom struggle will soon rest on their shoulders. He invoked lawyers among India's independence leaders, including Gandhi, Ambedkar, Patel and Tilak, to argue the legal profession was integral to that movement.
Kant acknowledged that today's legal profession is more competitive with a steeper learning curve, but praised young lawyers' resilience, adaptability and awareness of equality and access-to-justice issues. Supreme Court Bar Association president Vikas Singh and other bar members also spoke at the event.
