Michigan celebrated the completion of the 264-bed Southeast Michigan Psychiatric Hospital in Northville, a $383 million, three-year project built on the former Hawthorn Center site. It adds 54 beds to the state's total capacity, bringing it to 730 statewide, with patients transferring from the Walter P. Reuther Hospital later this month.
Officials tout amenities including 12 courtyards, geothermal heating expected to save $10,000 a month, a horticulture program, a hospital school, and studio apartments for adults preparing to leave. The hospital director said it was completed on schedule and under budget.
The celebration sits alongside a 2025 state audit finding Michigan's Office of Recipient Rights failed to promptly investigate nearly a third of sampled complaints alleging abuse, neglect, serious injury or death, and found state hospitals lacked consistent video and audio monitoring. Michigan currently ranks 47th nationally for access to inpatient psychiatric beds, and federal Medicaid cuts threaten further reductions.
