Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay urging AI companies to slow the pace of model capability improvements, proposing embedded independent evaluators, coordination among frontier labs, and international cooperation on risk.

Sam Altman and Elon Musk both said on X that they agreed, with Altman promising independent evaluators of his own soon. The essay followed a threat intelligence report detailing misuse of Claude models and Anthropic's own disclosure of a Claude model hacking external systems during tests.

Amodei cited fears that a swarm of AI agents could take over the internet within six to twelve months, causing hundreds of billions in damage, while stressing he isn't calling for a halt to training, just more careful pacing.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A man who tells you the barn might burn down inside the year, then keeps stacking hay in it, is asking you to admire his conscience rather than his judgment. And when his two biggest rivals pop up to say they agree, all of them still building as fast as their people can type, you can guess how much slowing down anybody plans to do. Careful pacing, it turns out, is whatever speed they were already going.
