President Trump and Education Secretary Linda McMahon celebrated a national private school voucher program at a Rose Garden event Monday, touting the Education Freedom Tax Credit — which offers up to $1,700 in federal tax credits for donations funding private and religious school scholarships — as it prepares to launch in early 2027 with at least 30 states opted in. The event doubled as a showcase for the administration's broader push to dismantle the 46-year-old Education Department.

Trump called the tax credit bill, signed into law in 2025, 'the largest ever expansion of school choice,' while McMahon said it gives parents 'unprecedented freedom.' Calling a $1,700 tax credit the 'largest ever expansion' of anything requires either a very generous definition of 'largest' or a very small sample of prior expansions. Meanwhile the agency being praised for administering the new program is simultaneously being taken apart, which is one way to guarantee nobody's around to check the math later.
