Pratap Singh Chundawat rescued a leopard from a well. He died in the line of duty, aged 40

Pratap Singh Chundawat, a 40-year-old ranger with the Rajasthan Forest Department, was known for daring wildlife rescues, including one in April when he descended by rope into a 70-foot well to tranquilize and remove a trapped leopard.

Weeks after being honored by the state for his conservation work, Chundawat and two forest guards confronted an earthmover and truck allegedly extracting soil illegally from forest land. When the truck fled, he pursued it on his motorcycle and was struck and dragged, dying the next day from his injuries.

He is survived by a wife and two children.
