Malawi's President Peter Mutharika has assigned Second Vice-President Enock Chihana, not First Vice-President Jane Ansah, to represent him at the 46th SADC Summit in South Africa on August 17, 2026. Foreign Affairs Minister George Chaponda confirmed the assignment.

The choice continues a pattern of sidelining Ansah from high-profile assignments, fueling speculation about strained relations between her and Mutharika, even though the First Vice-President would conventionally be the natural stand-in.

Chihana will engage regional leaders on trade, integration, and security while questions mount at home about why Malawi's actual second-in-command keeps missing the biggest stages.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
When a president keeps reaching past his own First Vice-President for the second-string deputy, that's not an administrative quirk, it's a message — and everyone in Lilongwe seems to have received it except, apparently, the press office issuing denials nobody asked for.
