Russian strikes knock out three of Ukraine’s largest steel plants

Russian ballistic missiles hit three of Ukraine's largest steel plants in early September, striking facilities in Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk that together account for roughly 90 percent of the country's steel output, according to Metinvest and ArcelorMittal. The strikes killed 17 workers.

A Metinvest executive told the Financial Times that Russian forces ‘knew exactly where to hit,’ targeting blast furnaces directly, and that repairs could take anywhere from days to years. The plants employ more than 15,000 people.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi estimated the country could lose about $1.5 billion in tax revenue from the attacks. President Zelensky has separately cited a 27 billion euro military budget deficit and asked allies for more funding, a request that reportedly unsettled some European officials.
