Religious leaders from across Arizona, including Catholic, Islamic and Jewish organizations, published a letter on Oct. 7 urging peaceful conduct at the polls ahead of the midterms. The letter condemns dehumanizing rhetoric and calls for election workers to be treated with respect and gratitude.
The letter arrives amid concern over possible federal election monitors and a rise in threats against election workers in recent years, including armed observers at Maricopa County drop boxes in a prior cycle. Organizer Rev. Katie Sexton said the effort is nonpartisan, aimed at behavior rather than any party, and is part of a broader Arizona Faith Network campaign that has trained over 140 poll monitors.
The campaign hopes to reach 200 trained monitors before Election Day.
