A HuffPost feature gathers accounts of grandparents relaxing rules around food, screens, and bedtime, including one grandmother who let her seven-year-old grandson eat chips for breakfast and watch television at 3 a.m. Psychologists quoted in the piece attribute the behavior to nostalgia, a wish to be the fun relative, or subtle jockeying for family standing.
One psychologist proposes a single test for whether the rule-bending has crossed a line: whether the grandparent would do the same thing with the parent standing right there. If the answer is no, the argument goes, the child is being asked to keep a secret rather than simply enjoy a treat.

Grandparents spoiling grandkids is about as shocking as a rooster crowing at sunrise. The whole piece boils down to one plain idea dressed up with a psychologist's badge: if Grandma has to hide it, it isn't really a treat, it's a secret. Took a lot of quotes to say what any parent already knew.
