Hurricane Polo makes landfall in Baja California, flooding coastal communities and toppling trees

Hurricane Polo made landfall near Las Barrancas in Baja California early Tuesday with sustained winds of 110 mph, causing flash flooding and toppling trees along the coast. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Polo is now crossing the Gulf of California and could bring heavy rain to the U.S. Southwest later this week.

Tropical Storm Rachel is tracking parallel to Mexico's Pacific coast, while Hurricane Nolo, still a Category 3, is moving away from Hawaii after causing flooding there over the weekend. Forecasters note Pacific storm activity this season is running above average, consistent with El Niño conditions.
