Karmelo Anthony seeks new trial in track meet stabbing case

Karmelo Anthony, convicted in June of murdering Austin Metcalf at a Dallas-area track meet, is seeking a new trial, arguing his lawyers withheld evidence about Metcalf's character under an informal 'gentleman's agreement' with prosecutors that later collapsed.

Defense attorneys say the deal fell apart mid-trial when prosecutors said it never covered a testifying defendant, prompting a shouting match and leaving Anthony afraid that testifying would open the door to being cross-examined with character evidence anyway. He chose not to testify and was sentenced to 35 years.

Prosecutors counter that they also held back damaging material under the same agreement, including a text in which Anthony allegedly said he wanted to stab someone. The presiding trial judge has been recused after telling a local outlet the jury 'got it right,' and a visiting judge is now deciding whether the trial itself was fair.
