House Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed warnings from AI researchers about existential risks from artificial intelligence, echoing President Trump's description of the concerns as a hoax comparable to climate change fears. Johnson made the remarks after a former Anthropic researcher warned that companies building advanced AI privately believe their work could end humanity within a decade.

Trump had posted that the only guardrail AI needs is a high-IQ president, and accused Amodei of pretending to be an angel after previously working with the administration. Johnson, meanwhile, said he plans to meet AI CEOs and insisted companies should self-regulate under existing product liability law rather than face a moratorium.

Anthropic's Amodei, along with OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk, had signed an essay calling for the industry to slow down and coordinate globally on safety.

Odd thing about a hoax: the people supposedly running it are the ones begging somebody to stop them. When the man selling you the mower says the blade might take your foot off, you don't accuse him of drumming up business. And the plan is that the mower company writes the safety manual, checks its own work, and calls you if anything goes wrong.
