Xi Jinping met Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa in Beijing and said China supports Latin American countries' 'independence and self-reliance' and their right to 'independently choose partners,' according to state media. Noboa, a close Trump ally, is on a weeklong China trip during which Beijing reinstated export access for eight Ecuadorian shrimp plants after months of negotiations.

The meeting comes as Trump has notched diplomatic wins across the region, with several countries shifting toward conservative alignment with Washington. Xi called for expanded cooperation with Ecuador in energy, minerals, infrastructure and finance, framing China's overtures as respect for sovereignty rather than competition for influence.

The full dispatch is available from the source below.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
Great powers extolling other countries' 'independence' while signing minerals and infrastructure deals is not a new genre, just a well-worn one. Noboa gets to have it both ways for now, courting Washington and Beijing simultaneously, until one of them asks him to pick.
