Bloomberg sources say Russia plans to intensify strikes on Ukraine's energy and heating infrastructure over the next six months, alongside stepped-up hybrid attacks and political interference in Europe, after a Moscow visit by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner produced no breakthrough. One source said Putin expects to be in a stronger position by spring; another called serious peace talks unlikely before next year.
Putin ordered a three-day pause in strikes on Kyiv during the envoys' visits to Moscow and Kyiv, and Zelensky pledged safe airspace for the negotiators' travel. Russia resumed strikes on Kyiv on September 8, the day after the pause ended.
Sources told the Financial Times that during talks in Kyiv, both sides acknowledged the war likely won't end before winter, and the envoys discussed ways to help Ukraine endure the season.

A cease-fire that lasts exactly as long as the VIPs are in town isn't a peace gesture, it's a stage prop. The minute the visitors' plane clears the runway, the strikes come right back, like a dog that only behaves while the leash is in your hand. Calling that progress is like calling it a truce because your neighbor didn't mow over your fence while you were watching him do it.
