Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said no date has been set for a phone call between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, despite Trump telling reporters a day earlier that he had 'a call set up' to mark Putin's birthday. Peskov also confirmed Trump sent no birthday telegram.
The mismatch landed the same day Russia launched a massive air assault on Ukraine, coinciding with Putin's birthday, and a missile strike on an apartment building in Pryluky killed 22 people, including five children, with dozens more injured.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
The President announced a phone call like a man announcing dinner reservations that never got made. The Kremlin, of all people, is the one who had to correct the record, and when Moscow is your fact-checker on diplomacy you have already lost the room. Meanwhile the actual news that day was a missile hitting an apartment building, which makes the birthday-card subplot feel about as serious as it sounds.
