An immigration judge ruled the U.S. can deport Salah Sarsour, president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, on foreign policy grounds tied to decades-old convictions in Israeli military courts, while separately rejecting the government's claim that he lied about those convictions on his green card application. Sarsour, a U.S. resident since 1993 with no American criminal record, was detained by ICE in March before a federal judge ordered his release in June, finding he'd raised a substantial claim he was being targeted for pro-Palestinian advocacy.
Sarsour says he was tortured into confessing in both Israeli cases and denies committing the underlying acts; his attorneys say the government has known of the convictions since he arrived in the U.S. He says deportation to the West Bank would effectively end his life, and plans to appeal.

The government lost on the lying charge and won anyway on the part that lets them send a longtime resident back to a place he says will kill him. That's a tidy outcome if your actual goal was never about the paperwork. Thirty years of living here quietly didn't count for much against a decades-old file somebody decided to dust off.
