Russia sentences Ukrainian man to 8.5 years in prison in first known case under new ‘aiding the enemy’ law

The Pskov Regional Court sentenced a Ukrainian man, identified by Mediazona as 26-year-old Anton Demidenko, to eight years and six months in a maximum-security colony for sending money to Ukrainian armed forces support funds while living in Russia. It's the first known sentencing under Article 276.1, a law added in late 2024 criminalizing assistance to a state 'opposing Russia' in the conflict, and it carries a mandatory 10-year minimum. The court gave no explanation for the below-minimum sentence, fined him 500,000 rubles, and seized his phone.
