Brazil’s tropical forest fund races to raise $2.7 billion before deadline

The Tropical Forests Forever Facility, launched by Brazil at COP30 to pay tropical countries for preserving forest, has raised about $7.3 billion of its $10 billion target for the end of 2026, according to Mongabay's reporting.

Norway's $3 billion pledge, the fund's largest, only releases once the $10 billion benchmark is hit, and Norwegian officials say there's no indication they'll move that deadline or loosen the terms.

This year's new government pledges have been modest: roughly $600 million combined from Luxembourg and the UK, plus $5 million from The Nature Conservancy, while the fund's own governance rules on risk-sharing are still being finalized.

TFFF's co-chairs told Mongabay the $10 billion target remains achievable and is merely a step toward a longer-term goal of $25 billion, a framing that does not address the roughly four months left to close a $2.7 billion gap.

A fund that needs $2.7 billion in under four months and describes itself as fully on track is a bit like a farmer three weeks from harvest insisting the drought is basically over. Norway's not budging, the rulebook's still being written, and everyone's betting on a last-minute rush that hasn't happened yet. Optimism is free to hand out, but it doesn't pay for forest.
