Trading food for medicine and crossing the river by zip line are part of life in Nepal flood zone

Flood survivors in Nepal are struggling to get medicine and cash even as authorities distribute food and supplies across 34 relief centers housing nearly 4,000 displaced people. One man at a Nuwakot district camp sold relief noodles for 400 rupees to afford his heart medication, saying the camp lacked his exact prescription.

Nepal’s disaster chief says health centers with doctors and medicine have been set up at each shelter and that hygiene measures are underway to prevent disease. Rescue teams from India, China and the United States are working to reach roughly 900 workers still missing at hydroelectric tunnel sites, where it remains unclear whether anyone trapped inside is alive.
