Britain's Prince William announced 15 finalists Friday for the 2026 Earthshot Prize, which awards 1 million pounds in each of five categories to conservation and climate projects. Among them is the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, which has built 204 wildlife crossings and helped protect 24 million hectares of land across the Rockies since 1993 by working with ranchers, Indigenous groups and governments.

Other finalists include an Argentine wildfire-tracking project using satellite data, a shipping-emissions alliance, and offshore wind developer Orsted. Winners will be announced November 17 at a televised ceremony in Mumbai.

Earthshot chief executive Jason Knauf said the prize's finalists work across borders strained by recent US-Canada trade tensions, calling environmental protection a popular cause that shouldn't get lost in political noise.

A prince handing out checks for animal overpasses is a nice thing, and grizzly bears crossing safely is nicer still. But calling it a moonshot to 'repair the planet by 2030' when the deadline is four years off and the fix is mostly fences and culverts is the kind of promise that ages the way milk does. The work itself sounds solid; it's the packaging that needs a diet.
