A viral video claiming Twitch streamer Hasan Piker made derogatory remarks about Black people and wished for a return to lynchings was found to be a heavily edited splice of three separate streams, stitched out of order. The National Republican Senatorial Committee first posted the compilation on Aug. 6, and commentator Scott Jennings reposted it Aug. 11 while Piker was campaigning for Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
Snopes tracked down all three original streams and found Piker's unedited remarks were sarcastic reactions to a chat comment and a separate video, delivered while arguing Democrats should focus on winning elections rather than what he considered failed messaging strategies. The lynching reference was not Piker endorsing the idea but mocking a comment made by someone else.
Piker called the edit defamation and said he is pursuing litigation against Jennings. The NRSC did not directly answer whether it had reviewed the original footage, instead sending a statement calling Piker a 'communist fanboy.'
