Ukraine's 10th Separate Edelweiss Mountain Assault Brigade set a new national record by flying its brigade flag over the summit of Hoverla using a drone, according to an announcement by the National Register of Records of Ukraine on October 1.
Soldiers from the brigade's Unmanned Systems Battalion raised a flag measuring 5.65 by 8.95 meters to a height of 794.9 meters above the peak, all while remaining physically in Donetsk Oblast. Organizers cited wind gusts up to 12 meters per second and the flag's 10-kilogram weight as the operation's chief hazards.
The brigade's record-keeper framed the achievement as being about the flag's identity and symbolism rather than altitude, a distinction offered without irony given a drone, not a climber, did the actual ascending. The unit previously held a record for staging a military orchestra concert at Ukraine's highest point in 2019.
