Germany to boost support for Ukraine after Russian sabotage at Leipzig airport

Germany plans to increase military aid to Ukraine, including thousands of strike drones and IRIS-T missiles, after formally attributing an August drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport to Russia, according to Der Spiegel. A drone carrying a detonator and explosives was found near a Ukrainian An-124 cargo plane on Aug. 5; German officials say the operation involved three drones and was larger than first reported.

Berlin is also moving to expand its intelligence services' powers, with legislation expected this fall that would let Germany's BND infiltrate attackers' servers, interfere with hostile supply chains, and in serious cases hack into facilities like drone factories to sabotage production. Germany has already closed Russia's last regional consulate, in Bonn, and is pushing for tougher EU sanctions targeting Russia's shadow fleet and citizen entry rules.

Nothing focuses a government's mind on air defense quite like finding a live drone parked next to one of its own cargo planes. Germany spent years being cautious about arming Ukraine and unusually blunt about not wanting to provoke anyone; a bomb on a runway in Leipzig apparently settled that debate. It shouldn't take an attempted attack on home soil to get here, but here we are.
