The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to let the Postal Service enforce a new mail-ballot rule after a Massachusetts judge blocked it for a second time, days after the justices sent an earlier challenge back on procedural grounds. The rule, stemming from an April executive order, would require states to share voter data with USPS and use new scannable envelopes, withholding delivery from ballots that don't comply and cutting funding to noncompliant states.

Judge Indira Talwani questioned the rush to implement the changes months before the midterms and blocked USPS action for 14 days. Twenty-three Democratic-led states and Washington, D.C. argue the plan risks disenfranchising voters with little time to fix errors, while the administration insists it's simply regulating mail, not elections. A whistleblower report this week claimed USPS dropped standard testing and troubleshooting to meet an 'impossible timeframe' set by the administration, and kept building the screening tool even after the executive order was blocked.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
An agency told to build a voter-verification system on a deadline so tight it had to skip testing the thing before using it on live ballots is not a confidence-inspiring picture. The administration calls any delay 'irreparable harm,' but the harm of a broken barcode scanner eating real ballots two months before an election never seems to make its list. Rushing the mail system into a partisan tool and then acting shocked when a judge asks questions is not exactly a defense.
