Moroccan authorities detained 111 people, most from sub-Saharan Africa, near the town of Fnideq on Saturday as they attempted to reach the Spanish exclave of Ceuta, using tear gas to disperse crowds gathered on nearby hills.

The action follows a mass crossing roughly two weeks earlier in which approximately 78,000 migrants arrived by sea in hours, with 100 deaths reported by the city's mayor.

Spain has deployed over 1,500 officers and installed a floating barrier, while Morocco added army units, navy speedboats and drones after social media posts suggested a second attempt was planned; the earlier crisis also prompted Italy to suspend Schengen arrangements with Spain.
