The Los Angeles Lakers are being sold for a reported $12.5 billion to Josh Kushner, brother of Jared Kushner, and former Disney CEO Bob Iger, in a deal that breaks the record set less than a year ago when Mark Walter bought his majority stake for roughly $10 billion. Walter's purchase from the Buss family was unanimously approved by the NBA Board of Governors in October 2025.

Kushner and Iger praised the Buss family's legacy and pledged to build on it, while Walter called ownership one of the great honors of his life. Jerry Buss originally bought the Lakers, the Kings, and the Forum for $67.5 million in 1979; ownership passed to his six children after his 2013 death before eventually reaching Walter.

Star player Luka Doncic welcomed the sale on social media, while the deal arrives amid unrelated controversy involving Kushner's venture firm and an aborted FIFA investment scheme. The Lakers, who lost LeBron James to Philadelphia this summer, have 17 NBA titles, one behind Boston's record 18.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A $12.5 billion price tag for a team that just lost its best player in decades is less a valuation of basketball than a valuation of proximity to a presidential son-in-law's family tree. Sports ownership keeps proving it was never really about sports.
