Marine Le Pen's National Rally will form a group in the French Senate for the first time, after the party and an allied faction won at least 15 seats in weekend elections, clearing the 10-seat threshold needed. The Senate remains dominated by the traditional right, and party leader Jordan Bardella called the result confirmation of momentum heading into next year's presidential race.

A new poll shows Le Pen leading the first round of voting to succeed Emmanuel Macron with 35-36% support, ahead of France Unbowed's Jean-Luc Mélenchon and centrist Édouard Philippe in hypothetical runoffs. Le Pen's party entered the Senate with just two seats in 2014 and three in 2023, making the jump to 15 a notable acceleration.

Le Monde described the results as a 'warning,' noting the National Rally's establishment within French institutions after barely a decade, even though the overall Senate majority hasn't shifted.

Fifteen seats in a 348-seat chamber isn't a takeover, but growth from two to three to fifteen in a decade is the kind of curve you notice on a chart even if the total number still looks small on paper. Calling it historic while also calling it a warning is how you know both sides read the same numbers and came away scared for different reasons. Whatever happens in the spring, nobody in Paris gets to say they didn't see it coming.
