Luigi Mangione appeared in court ahead of his New York murder trial, set to begin jury selection September 8, over the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Judge Gregory Carro has ruled that a gun and a notebook containing Mangione's purported writings can be used at trial, while excluding other items including a phone, wallet, passport, and computer chip seized at his Pennsylvania arrest.

Prosecutors have presented surveillance footage they say shows the shooting and Mangione's movements afterward, along with ballistics and fingerprint evidence. Mangione's defense has not yet detailed an alternative theory of the case, having floated and withdrawn an extreme emotional disturbance argument, and has not proposed an insanity defense.

Carro also addressed public access, announcing an overflow room for media and spectators after Mangione's attorneys criticized the court's press procedures and raised, then withdrew, suggestions that prosecutors were influencing those procedures. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to state charges including second-degree murder and weapons offenses, and separately faces a federal trial next year to which he has also pleaded not guilty.
