'Impeachable Offense': Ex-Ethics Chief Shreds Trump's Ugly New 'Propaganda' Video

Former White House ethics attorney Richard Painter called Trump administration ads promoting the president 'an impeachable offense,' saying federal law bars government-sponsored political propaganda and that taxpayer money has no business funding campaign-style ads. One spot uses a song over images of Trump with UFC's Dana White praising him; another recycles footage from Trump's 2024 campaign.

The White House has described both as public service announcements, though neither addresses a public health or safety issue in any conventional sense. Norm Eisen, a former Obama ethics official, said the administration has gone 'from breaking the law to trampling it,' while Rep. Jamie Raskin suggested the ads may amount to felony theft of government property for political use.

Sen. John Kennedy, a Republican, broke with the administration, saying no official including Trump should spend public money on ads for themselves, adding there 'ought to be a rule' against it, apparently unaware or unconcerned that such rules already exist.

If the county clerk bought billboards of himself on the road fund's dime, he'd be explaining it to a judge by Friday, and nobody would buy that it was a public service. A spot with a fight promoter singing your praises doesn't keep anybody safe from anything. Senator Kennedy is right that there ought to be a rule. There is one. Somebody just has to pick it up and use it.
