WestJet has agreed to pay C$4.5m to settle a class action brought by 3,452 female flight attendants who alleged the airline failed to maintain a safe workplace. The suit stemmed from allegations by former flight attendant Mandalena Lewis that a pilot sexually assaulted her in Hawaii in 2010, and a colleague in 2008, while WestJet kept him flying.
The settlement, approved by a British Columbia judge, requires WestJet to commission a third-party workplace inquiry into harassment prevalence and reporting failures, but does not include an admission of wrongdoing or mandatory anti-harassment training for pilots, both of which the suit had sought.
