The Pentagon plans to livestream the firing-squad execution of former Army Maj. Nidal Hasan on Dec. 3 at Fort Hood, the same day and hour as his 2009 attack that killed 13 people, which would be the first public execution in the U.S. in nearly a century.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called the request a 'no-brainer,' and President Trump approved the plan, though Axios reported he has since expressed private misgivings about the livestream; Vice President JD Vance said he would not watch and questioned whether it would happen at all.
Human rights advocates, religious leaders including the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and lawmakers from both parties have criticized the plan, while military regulations, unlike federal prison rules, contain no ban on broadcasting executions.

When the Defense Secretary calls something a no-brainer, it's fair to ask whether any brains got a vote. The country went the better part of a century without turning a killing into a broadcast, and the reason hasn't changed just because the Army's rulebook never got around to writing it down. Even the president is having second thoughts, and when he's the cautious one in the room, the room has a problem.
