At a White House event, President Trump remarked that Welles Crowther, the volunteer firefighter and equities trader known as the man in the red bandana who helped guide roughly 18 people to safety from the World Trade Center's South Tower before he died in its collapse, had become 'more famous' than himself, adding he did not like it.

Trump made the comments while posthumously awarding Crowther the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Crowther's story, documented in a 2002 New York Times article and on the 9/11 Memorial's website, describes him repeatedly returning into the burning building to lead survivors to a stairwell.

The remarks drew swift criticism online, with commentators including a member of Congress and several journalists calling them disgraceful and noting Trump played no role in the rescue or recovery efforts that day.
