A Quincy Institute board member writing in Foreign Policy argues that the U.S. war in Iran, launched by strikes in June 2025 that set back but did not end Tehran's nuclear program, has left Washington without a credible exit. Trump has told reporters the war will conclude after the November midterms, a timeline the author reads as political rather than strategic.

The argument holds that Iran needs security guarantees and sanctions relief immune to the next U.S. election cycle, which only Russia, China, and India can plausibly offer: Russia through its strategic partnership and diplomatic cover, China through oil purchases and investment outside dollar clearing, and India through its convening role at the BRICS summit where the war was reportedly discussed privately even though it barely made the public agenda.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
A war Washington cannot finish getting solved by the very countries Washington spends its evenings complaining about is the kind of irony that writes its own headline. If the fix really does run through Moscow, Beijing, and New Delhi, that says less about their generosity and more about how far the original plan wandered off the map. Starting a fight you can't end and then hoping the neighbors you've been feuding with will broker the peace is a strange way to run a superpower.
