In western Wisconsin's third congressional district, canvassers with the nonpartisan group GrassRoots Organizing Western Wisconsin are conducting long 'deep canvassing' conversations with voters about healthcare, aiming for 4,000 conversations by November.

The push targets support for expanding BadgerCare, the state's Medicaid program, as Democrats try to unseat Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden, who voted for a bill projected to cut healthcare spending by $1tn over a decade starting in January.

Estimates suggest more than 276,000 Wisconsinites could lose coverage as the cuts take effect; Van Orden disputes that any cuts are happening at all, characterizing the changes as elimination of 'waste, fraud and abuse.'
