Moroccan police arrested 111 people, including 109 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and two Moroccan nationals, near Fnideq as they tried to reach Spain's Ceuta enclave on Saturday.

The attempt came two weeks after more than 72,000 people surged into Ceuta in a single crossing that killed at least 96 people and set off anti-immigration rhetoric across Europe. Morocco used teargas on the hills above the border and ordered Spanish broadcasters' journalists out of Fnideq without explanation.

Spain has since installed a maritime barrier and pushed police numbers in Ceuta past 1,600, with the interior minister promising migrants who arrived irregularly will not be allowed to stay, move to the mainland, or gain legal status, barring rare vulnerability exceptions. About 5,000 migrants remain in the territory, many sheltering under bamboo structures on an urban beach in the heat.
