The Texas State Board of Education approved new high school social studies standards Friday requiring students to learn how “radical Islam” motivated the September 11 attacks and how “the teachings of jihad” led to the “conquest of Christian lands.” The standards, taking effect in 2030, also frame early Islamic history around “brutal military campaigns” and “harem slaves.”

A content advisor for the board warned in a report that the characterizations “don’t hold up to close historical scrutiny” and depart from the neutral tone applied to other religions in the same course. Earlier this year the board also removed a proposed standard on Muslim contributions to algebra and astronomy.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations held a press conference where a Muslim high school student described being called a bomber and accused of celebrating an attack that happened a decade before he was born. The Texas Education Agency did not respond to requests for comment ahead of the holiday.

So the board hired somebody to check the history, and when he checked it and said it did not hold up, they went ahead anyway. That is like asking the mechanic to look under the hood and then driving off when he starts talking. The part that sticks with me is the boy who got called a bomber over something that happened before he was born, and now the state has put its name on the reason.
