Researchers exploring the ocean's midwater zone off the coast of Brazil discovered 31 new species, including a giant octopus observed eating a jellyfish and a fast-moving gossamer worm. The midwater zone, the space between the sunlit surface and the seafloor, is described as Earth's largest and least explored habitable ecosystem.

The team used 3D lasers and advanced microscopes to confirm the new species within days, a process that traditionally takes researchers decades.
