ISW map refutes Russian Defense Ministry claims of encircling Dobropillya

The Institute for the Study of War says Russian Defense Ministry claims of encircling Dobropillya in Donetsk Oblast are false, with the nearest confirmed Russian positions still about 10.2 kilometers from the city.

ISW's own mapping shows the Russian ministry's claimed advances, especially north of the settlement, don't match verifiable battlefield developments, and analysts found no evidence of significant Russian gains toward the city in recent weeks.

The think tank suggests the encirclement claim may be an information operation meant to distract from Russian setbacks near Lyman, even as Moscow shifts armor and reportedly deploys some 1,200 drone operators to the Dobropillya axis for expected autumn assaults.

A military that needs a fictional map to feel good about its week is a military having a rough autumn. Drawing purple arrows on territory you don't hold is cheap, and apparently that's the point. The real fighting still seems to be happening ten kilometers away from where the press release says it is.
