Michigan US Senate candidates call for suspending state and federal gas taxes

Michigan's two major U.S. Senate candidates, Republican Mike Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, both say they support suspending state and federal gas taxes as prices have spiked, with regular unleaded topping $4.75 a gallon and diesel hitting $6.54. State and federal taxes account for roughly 70 cents of every gallon.

Rogers frames the suspension as relief for working families, while El-Sayed's campaign says the taxes aren't actually what's driving the price spike and points instead to trade and foreign policy tensions. Federal legislation to suspend the gas tax exists, but Congress has already left for recess until after the midterms.

In Lansing, Republican state House Speaker Matt Hall said suspending the state tax isn't realistic given its role funding the transportation budget, leaving no actual movement behind the agreement in either statehouse.

Both candidates found a microphone and something to say into it, which is different from either of them finding a bill that passes. When the guy who runs the state House says the plan isn't realistic, that's usually the part of the story that matters more than the press releases. Agreeing on a tax cut is easy when nobody has to vote on it before November.
