Federal prosecutors in Los Angeles say Wanying 'Heather' Zhang, 34, of Irvine, was arrested at LAX as she prepared to board a flight to China, accused of spying on U.S.-based relatives of a senior Taiwanese official widely reported to be President Lai Ching-te's son.
The complaint describes Zhang traveling to China to meet government officials, then flying to the Pacific Northwest, renting a car, and surveilling the victim's residence while texting updates like 'Saw him, young male, it's the young one' to a Chinese official, along with license plate numbers from vehicles at the home.
She's charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent and faces up to 10 years if convicted; no attorney was listed as of the announcement.

✒ FROM THE EDITORIAL DESK
If this complaint holds up, the whole operation ran on text messages and a boarding pass selfie, which is either the laziest spycraft on record or proof that nobody expects to get caught doing it. Either way, a government willing to track a rival's family across the Pacific Northwest isn't being subtle about what it thinks it can get away with. The appropriate response is not awe at the sophistication, there wasn't any.
