U.S. life expectancy has climbed to 79 years after a pandemic-era dip, still behind Japan's 84 and Norway's 82, according to the report. Doctors interviewed are now drawing attention to a second measure, 'healthspan,' meaning the number of years a person lives without disabling chronic disease, as distinct from raw lifespan.

Geriatrician Dr. Ariela Orkaby of Mass General Brigham says healthspan typically peaks around age 65, some 15 years short of average lifespan, with chronic conditions like hypertension, arthritis, cancer and stroke becoming markedly more common through the 60s and 70s. Experts quoted stress there is no single supplement or treatment that reliably extends either measure, pointing instead to ongoing lifestyle management.

The actual guidance here, manage your chronic conditions and don't expect a pill to fix it, is the same thing doctors have been saying for decades, just wearing a new label. New vocabulary isn't new information, no matter how many credentials get attached to it.
