Spotify will begin adding an "AI Persona" badge to some artist profiles starting mid-September, flagging accounts whose identity may be AI-generated rather than a real person. The badge will appear on profile banners, about sections, search results, and playlist tracks, and artists carrying it will be excluded from personalized recommendations unless a user already follows them.
The company says the change follows listener complaints about discovering profiles they'd assumed were human turned out to be AI-generated, and it frames the move as boosting "transparency" and "trust." Spotify says the badge concerns an artist's public identity, not how a track was made, since AI tools are already used within plenty of human-made music via its separate AI Credits feature, which gets tens of thousands of submissions daily.
Spotify says it hopes AI-generated profiles will self-disclose, though it will also review accounts that appear to meet its criteria and give them a chance to appeal. It's not clear how the review process will scale against the volume of new AI music already flowing through the platform.
