Croatia detains Ukrainian Volodymyr Zhuravlev, one of the suspects in Nord Stream pipeline bombing

Croatian investigators have detained Volodymyr Zhuravlev, a 49-year-old Ukrainian diving instructor whom German prosecutors accuse of helping plant explosives on the Nord Stream pipeline in September 2022. Poland had refused to extradite him to Germany in October 2025; German authorities now plan to seek his extradition from Croatia instead.

German investigators say Zhuravlev and other participants departed from Rostock by yacht before diving to place the explosives; Zhuravlev denies involvement and says he was in Ukraine at the time. Another suspect, Serhiy Kuznetsov, was detained in Italy a year ago, with a local court authorizing his extradition to Germany in November 2025.
