GOP Senator Argues Trump May Be Breaking The Law With Russia Deal

Sen. Thom Tillis said on NBC's Meet the Press that President Trump's new diesel fuel deal with Vladimir Putin may violate a 2022 law barring Russian oil imports absent a Russian withdrawal from Ukraine. Trump announced the arrangement Friday on Truth Social, claiming it would bring fuel prices down 'in record numbers.' Tillis said he believes the president 'may be' breaking the law and warned the deal could carry 'deadly consequences.'

Tillis pointed to the 86-vote Senate passage of a sanctions bill, signed by Trump three weeks earlier, that authorized tariffs up to 100% on buyers of Russian oil. He called the diesel deal 'the exact opposite of the intent of that bill' and cited NBC News reports that Russia is shipping explosives and intelligence to Iran. Tillis predicted Putin will try to 'embarrass or undermine' Trump at his first opportunity.

A man who votes for a sanctions bill with 86 of his colleagues and then watches the president wave it off like a stop sign in an empty lot has a decision to make about which one he actually believes in. Tillis seems to know which way this cookie crumbles, he just isn't ready to say it plainly yet. Calling Putin untrustworthy on television is easy; doing something about a deal your own party made possible is the hard part nobody on that stage wants to touch.
