Alternative for Germany wins Saxony-Anhalt election but may fall short of majority

Alternative for Germany won 44.5% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt's state election, according to an exit poll, but appears to have fallen short of the outright majority its lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund said was required for AfD to take power. Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democrats trailed badly at 18.5%, with the Left Party, Greens, and Social Democrats splitting the remainder.

Turnout hit a record 76.5%. Germany's domestic intelligence service classifies the state AfD chapter as 'right-wing extremist,' and every other major party has ruled out a coalition with it, leaving the state's governing math unresolved even after a decisive win.

A party can win the biggest share of the vote and still not get to run the place, and that's exactly the bind AfD finds itself in here. Its own leader set the bar at 45 percent and came up shy, so now the group that swept the field is stuck outside the door everyone else agreed to lock. Turnout that high tells you people showed up mostly to make sure of that lock, not to hand over the keys.
